City of Contemplation

This is a commissioned work installed at Tiger House, an artist-in-residence in Zhujiajiao, Shanghai. Zhujiajiao is known as a water town 40km from the center of Shanghai, but behind its beauty lies both countless ruins and new apartment buildings. I created a space for thought by collecting approximately 400 pieces of wood from these ruins and waste disposal sites and accumulating them in the shape of urban buildings. The idea for a space for thought was born from dialogue with various local artists studying Eastern philosophy. The space, surrounded by a wide variety of wood, resembles a microcosm of the city, but the way the wood decays as waste material is a sign of impermanence itself, creating a space for what they call "awareness of awareness itself."

Zhujiajiao is famous as a water capital 40km far from the center of Shanghai, but nowadays there are countless ruins and new apartment construction works constitute behind the beauty. The experience staying such town inspired and guided me to create this contemplation space. The work is like buildings growing in a city, made of 400 pieces of waste wood collected from ruins and trash site disposal.
In spite of the space surrounded by wide variety of wood is like a microcosm of the city, I feel as waste wood certainly telling us the mutability of human being. So this work can be say suitable to contemplate for "awareness of awareness itself".
