WhiteBox Web History

2018

This commissioned work was installed at WhiteBox, an art space on New York's Lower East Side (relocated in 2019). The artist created abstract forms representing the records and memories of the 20 years since WhiteBox was founded, and attempted to give concrete form to the "history of the place" that exists separately from the space. The source material for the work was exhibition posters collected from websites over the past 20 years. These are records of exhibitions that exist as a kind of reality on the web. By printing and folding these posters, the artist materialized all of WhiteBox's past activities, and depicted the invisibility of the "activity of the place" itself through the growing, plant-like forms.
