The power outages caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake made us realize once again that light is the very essence of human activity. Light is present where people gather, and it gives us a sense of peace. Is it possible to create light that captures this feeling?

This work is set up by placing microphones in three locations within Elephant's Trunk Park, where it is installed, to pick up the surrounding noise and make the light flicker according to the intensity of the sound. The light reacts to people's voices, boat whistles, footsteps, etc., and the flickering light like flames is a concrete embodiment of "life" through sound.

By appreciating the flames of activity created by the sounds of the surroundings, we hope you will sense fragments of life that exist as a matter of course.

SMART ILLUMINATION YOKOHAMA 2017

Through the experience of the power outage caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake, people strongly recognized again that light is the epitome of life. Lights exist in a place where people gather, and they have the power to impress people. I wanted to create a work that conveys such an impression to visitors.

By 3 microphones in the park where this work is situated, the microphones pick up the surrounding noise and make the light flicker in accordance with the strength of the noise. With the reaction of light, it looks like installing the work flickers like a flame. Furthermore, by reproducing the collected sound from the speaker installed in the base, we produced a mechanism to make the visitors grasp this work's concept.

By appreciating this work, you will reconfirm the value of "life" which you take for granted.
