Tender Cities

2018-2019

A series in which paper waste is collected from various countries and sculptures are created in the shape of maps of those countries and cities.

Paper waste is a fragment of the city. Sculptures are created by cutting and folding the waste with one's own hands, and these sculptures appear in the city as street art in a guerrilla style.

However, naturally, due to city cleaning and the elements, they end up returning to the city's garbage within a week or so.

After the process of transforming trash, a fragment of the city, into a sculpture and then disappearing into the city, all that remains is the time spent folding it and the memories of that time.

It is the very definition of the evil scrap-and-build of cities, but the crumbling map (border) also seems to regain its natural shape.

These works are the series of sculptures made out of paper trash.

I think various kinds of paper trash which we can find on the street are the piece of "town". I cut and fold them with my hands, then I hong works on the street like a guerilla.

But of course it will be rubbish again due to rain, wind or city cleaning.

There is only "time" and "memory" left after those processes that make sculpture from piece of the city, are broken and put back in to the city.

This is a metaphor of our “Scrape and build-up”. And we can see the primitive shape of our border of each country as nature.
