Light of Life

SMART ILLUMINATION YOKOHAMA 2017

December 2017

The power outages caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake reminded us that light is the very essence of human activity. Light is present where people gather, and it gives us a sense of peace. Is it possible to create light that captures this sensation? This work installs microphones in three locations within Elephant's Nose Park, where it is installed, to pick up the sounds of the surrounding commotion and cause the light to flicker in response to the intensity of the sounds. The flickering light, like a flame, responds to sounds like people's voices, boat whistles, and footsteps, and is a concrete embodiment of "life" through sound. By appreciating the flames of human activity brought to life by the sounds of the surroundings, we hope to sense fragments of life that exist naturally.
